Blackbird Watch Manual Vol.14
For the fourteenth volume of Blackbird Watch Manual, the theme is wanderlust, we explore the desire to travel where the journey matters more than the destination. This concept takes many forms. In our cover story, we travelled with Vacheron Constantin who pursued perpetual exploration of fine watchmaking for over 270 years. Their latest creation, while part of the Overseas collection, itself linked with exploration, is an expression of their constant quest for perfection. It takes a keen eye to notice that the new Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin is just that a bit slenderer than before, but it takes an even more inquisitive mind to delve into the new calibre 2550.
In horology, watches are essential tools for travellers, whether on a wanderlust driven trip or heading to an important meeting. This volume examines the relationship between time and travel, and its influence on watch enthusiasts. We also look at what is arguably one of the most recognisable timepieces dedicated to the casual or professional navigators, the Rolex GMT-Master II, and how its aesthetic has remained constant for more than 70 years. For collectors, we took an in-depth look at the legends that is the Patek Philippe reference 5531 and the beautiful craftsmanship that enables the maison’s very sought after enamel dials, which, combined with the world time and minute repeater, are expressions of classical horology at its best.
At Blackbird, we are inspired by motoring. We explored historical solo motorcycle expeditions such as the journey of Ted Simon and Elspeth Beard, who undertook round‑the‑world journeys, as well as rallies organised by Malle London, whose turnkey motorcycle gatherings in scenic locations have become highly sought after.
We are also inspired by Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto on his philosophy on photo-taking. His visual explorations and unusual techniques, using large-format cameras and long exposures, have produced striking seascapes, architectural studies, and other subjects.
Not taking time into account, we present you some very enticing escapes available through luxurious stays in a desert landscape, a classical cross continent rail journey in Europe, or a rugged nature experience in Mongolia.
